Defect Summary:
Certain passenger vehicles equipped with sport model steering wheels fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 208, "Occupant Crash Protection." during NHTSA compliance testing, in low risk deployment testing for 5th percentile female crash test dummy in out-of-position unbelted position test, irregularities were demonstrated.
Consequence Summary:
The manufacturer is continuing to develop data concerning these tests. The manufacturer is notifying owners that they should have their air bag modules replaced with a module that is designed to be compatible with the existing NHTSA tests.
Corrective Summary:
Dealers will install a new air bag inflator module. The recall is expected to begin during mid-March 2006. Owners should contact Mercedes Benz at 1-800-367-6372.
