Topaz Doesn't Turn Over

Q. 1992 Mercury Topaz 4 cylinder, 105,000 miles, only clicks when try to start. Now doesn't make any noise what so ever. Put a new battery in it and lights work better. Any suggestions on how to fix and what to look for.

Thanks for your help.
Mike

A. I would put a test light on the small terminal of the starter solenoid and see if there is power there when the key is in the START position. If there is, check the wire at the starter and see if there is power there when the key is in the START position. If there is, replace the starter. If not, replace the solenoid.

If there is no power to the small terminal on the solenoid, then there it is likely a bad ignition switch, wiring problem or a bad fusible link or fuse.
