Mercedes Benz Motor Mounts
Q. I own 1985 Mercedes Benz 230TE wagon european model(?) with 170,000 miles. It is automatic with power steering, A/C and fuel injection. Would you guide me how to replace engine rubber mounts? The driver side, front one is broken and playing? What kind of tools do I need? Is it a bad idea to drive the wagon without replacing the rubber mount(s)?
The other day, I read your recommendation about 300D turbo. What about 240 diesel? I understand the fact that its power/performance would be less than 300 diesel turbo, but is the 240D engine as durable as 300D? What is your opinion about its overall quality compared to 300D? Will you recommend 240 diesel? I'm very curious about it because I like to buy one of them. Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
StephenA. The motor mount is pretty easy when you have the car on a lift. It's harder on your back on the ground. There is one bolt if from the top and one from the bottom. Jack up the engine until the old mount comes out. You will probably have to loosen the other mount as well. I would replace both while I was at it. Slide in the new mount and slowly lower the engine. Start both bolts be a goodly amount and lower the engine completely.

I would stay away from the Mercedes Benz 240D. They don't have a real good track record and you will be disappointed in the amount of power it has.
