Infiniti G20 Popping And Knocking

Q. Hi, I got a 1995 Infiniti G20. The details are as below:

  • 1995 Infiniti G20
  • Automatic transmission
  • 79,500 miles
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control
Infiniti G20 Popping And Knocking

Recently, I have noticed two problems:

  1. The car gives a popping noise when I hit the brake, front-left-driver side, or there is an uneven road. This noise is prominent when I am at low speeds. At high speeds on the freeway it does not give any noise.

  2. After the engine is shut down, the hood seems to give some noise for quite some time. This knocking noise happens for some 10 minutes. Not sure what the noise is as I never had it before. Can you please help me?

Thanks,
Jitendra

A. 1. I would have the front brakes looked at. Sometimes the pad material separates from the metal backing plate and moves around in the caliper. Also, if the pad tension springs rot out or brake, the whole brake pad can move around.

There may also be a problem with the left front shock that can cause a similar noise.

2. I have never heard a hood make noise. You are probably hearing something under the hood that is making noise. The next time you hear it, open the hood and see if the noise goes away. If it does, the rubber hood stops and insulators may be broke or missing.

If it doesn't go away, you should be able to isolate the origin somewhat.
