Chevy Camaro Has Low Oil Pressure
Q. Hi, I've got a 1996 Chevy Camaro 3.8 liter V-6 with 79,000 miles and a manual transmission. About a month ago I noticed the oil pressure was very low and fluctuating slightly. I then noticed a leak coming out of the oil pressure switch. Took it to the shop and got it fixed no more leaking oil, and the oil pressure remains normal until the car warms up.
After it's warmed up and the car is idle the oil pressure will drop and the car will shake slightly. When it's moving the oil pressure is normal. Took it back to the shop and they said they couldn't find anything wrong with it. Could an after market oil pressure switch be the issue or something else entirely? Anything is a big help.
Thanks,
AshtonA. I would have a mechanical oil pressure gauge put on it temporarily to make sure just exactly what the oil pressure is when it's hot. If it's reads too low, then something is wrong.
The sending unit is not the most accurate thing but should be in the "ball park". If the gauge reads too low, there may be a worn oil pump or excessive oil clearances in the main or rod bearings.
