Chevy Cavalier A/C Clutch Bearing?

Q. Vince, I have a 1997 Chevy Cavalier with 70,000 miles, automatic transmission with the 2.4 liter engine. I have a squealing noise coming from A/C compressor. When I engage A/C the noise stops. As long as I leave A/C engaged there is no noise. Am I correct in suspecting A/C clutch bearing? A/C works fine when engaged.

Chevy Cavalier A/C Clutch Bearing?

What is involved with replacing this bearing? Or A/C clutch? Bearing is about $25.00, A/C clutch is over $100.00. I have both Chiltons and Haynes manuals for this vehicle. Neither manual covers A/C clutch removal or bearing replacement.

Thanks...

A. There are a few special tools needed to replace that bearing. They may be hard to come by! I never had much luck in changing that bearing and have just replaced the complete compressor. I know they are expensive, but it assures no future problems with leaking front seals or the compressor body itself.
