Ford Explorer XLT Binding Up

Q. Vincent: I have a 1997 Ford Explorer XLT Autotract 6 cylinder with 84,000 miles. It has automatic transmission, power steering, and ABS. Two days ago I started experiencing a binding sensation from the front end when making a sharp left or right turn. Since then I have noticed that the "4WD" and "4WD LOW" indicating lights flash six times than go out.

Ford Explorer XLT Binding Up

This repeats at exactly two-minute intervals. While driving the vehicle, I switch to full time 4WD but nothing happens. If I stop, shut it off, starting and put the truck 4WD, and then switch back to Auto it appears to temporarily solve the problem; however, this problem has occurred several times over the past two days, but only at low speed. e.g turning in/out of a parking space. Any idea what may be causing this?

Thanks,
Michael

A. I think I have your answer right here.

• Shudder Or Binding Sensation - In Tight Turns While Vehicle Is In 4x4 Auto Mode - Vehicles Built Through April 1997.

• Transfer Case - Shudder/Binding Sensation In Tight Turns While Vehicle Is In 4x4 Auto Mode - Vehicles Built Through April 1997.

LIGHT TRUCK:
1995-97 EXPLORER

ISSUE:
A shudder or binding sensation in tight turns while in 4X4 Auto Mode may be experienced on some vehicles. The shudder is due to a high torque output from the clutch in some transfer cases.

ACTION:
Re-calibrate the existing Generic Electronic Module (GEM) if the GEM is identified with engineering part number F77B-14B205-BB. The revised calibration commands a lower torque which allows the transfer case clutch to engage smoother so shudder or binding should not result.

I think a call to your Ford Dealer is in order.
