I Wonder Which Scan Tool To Buy???

Q. Mr. Ciulla, I am considering on two different AutoXray hand held scan tools. Either the 6000 or the 5000. There is a difference of about $ 120.00. The 6000 is the latest model and the most advanced. The difference is, the 6000 reads "enhanced" OBD II codes. I mostly work on GM vehicles and am wondering if I will run in to many situations where the enhanced codes will help me.

I Wonder Which Scan Tool To Buy???

I want to use this tool for several years and do not want something that will be obsolete in five years. Both models say they will read the CAN codes that will be used in the future.

Thanks for your expert advice.

A. I did a review on the AutoXray EZ-Link Scanner and was very pleased with the ease of use and performance. And I still think it's a good deal for the DIY.

EZ-SCAN 6000

As far as which one to get, if it were me, I would go for the EZ-SCAN 6000. I'll tell you why. In the next couple of years OBD is going to go through some big advances and the EZ-SCAN 6000 will be able to keep up with them. The Controller Area Network (CAN) protocol will be used by everybody along with, I believe, enhanced OBD-II Codes.

If the extra $120.00 is not really an issue, then go for the 6000. When I buy electronics, scan tools, DVD players, computers or anything, I tend to over buy. I have found that as I use something and learn how to use all the capabilities I always wind up upgrading.

Also, I believe it's better to have it and not need it than it is to need it and not have it.
