Honda Odyssey Maintenance Required
Q. I have no problem getting the 30,000 mile service maintenance done, but I do have a problem with only being allowed to take the vehicle to a Honda dealer - all because the "Maintenance Required" light can only be turned off by them. Is there some way for me or my mechanic to turn the light off?
Good van, but forcing me to use the Honda dealer for maintenance smacks of monopoly. 2000 Honda Odyssey

ThanksA. I always recommend that the services required on a new car be done at a dealership, at least until the end of the warranty. This way if there is a major problem after the warranty expires the manufacturer will be more likely to help out because the maintenance is easily documented and there will be no question as to the quality of the parts used.
Of course you are free to have the service performed anywhere you like. It is not required that the services be performed at the dealer. As for the Maintenance Required Light, you, or your mechanic, can reset it. Here's how to reset the light:
- Turn off the engine.
- Press and hold the select/reset button in the instrument panel, then turn the ignition switch ON (Position II).
- Hold the button for at least 10 seconds, until the indicator resets.
That's all there is to it.
