Door Locks And Alarms

Q. Hi, I have a 1990 Honda Civic DX, 1.5 litre automatic sedan. My car does not have any power door locks but I would like to add them. I called a garage and they charge $50.00 American per door. I would also like to put in an alarm that also has remote keyless entry and I know that will cost about $200.00 American.

I would also like to put in a tachometer. I was wondering if these things are do-it-yourself things? I have no formal education on car repair and I don't know a lot about repairing cars. Is it possible to seriously mess up my car if I attempt to do these things myself? Or is it relatively safe? Also, my car vibrates a lot when in idle. What can that be?

Thanks a lot for your time,
Rocky

A. The things you want to do can be a good DIY project, but it does require a moderate to advanced skill level. If done improperly, you can cause problems, especially with the alarm, keyless entry and tachometer.

As for the rough idle, it could be something as simple as a good tune up with a new distributor cap, rotor and wires to fix it. It could also have a vacuum leak somewhere, so a check of all the vacuum hoses and lines, along with the PCV system, should be checked and fix whatever is found wrong. If you still have a rough idle after this is done, then we have to start to look into the electronic controls.
