Jeep Cherokee Vs Nissan Pathfinder

Q. Vince: I'm trying to decide between a Jeep Cherokee, 6 cylinder, and a Nissan Pathfinder, 6 cylinder. I'm looking at models between 1990 to 1994 and only have $2,500.00 to $3,000.00 to spend. I've heard that Nissan engines always break exhaust manifold bolts and it gets expensive to have them replaced.

I've also heard the Jeep 6 cylinder engine is notorious for oil leaks. What would you buy for this much money in your budget, to carry three kids and dog?

A. What you have heard is true. The early 3.0 liter VG30E engines did have problems with weak exhaust manifold studs that would break or fall out and cause an exhaust leak. The exhaust manifold stud has been changed for improved durability and avaialble to correct this problem. These improved manifold studs have been used in regular production since model year 1993.

As for the Jeep the 4.0 liter L6 engine had a similar problem that required the replacement of the exhaust manifold and gasket. They also enjoy a reputaion of being an oil leaker. Most notably, the head gasket leaking oil along the right side of the engine. The repair involves replacement of the cylinder head gasket with a revised gasket.

Also, the rear main seals are prone to leaking as well as sucking oil into the air cleaner.

I'll leave it to you to decide which is the lesser of the two evils.

As to the other part of your question, I think I answered that before. Volkswagen Jetta, Time To Retire It
