Rear Drum Brakes

Q. Dear Vince, I own a 1986.5 Nissan 4x4 V-6 3.0 liter truck. I am in the process of putting new springs and retaining clips on my rear drum brakes. The shoes are new, but when I back up and this only happens when I back up the brakes want to grab in the rear. Do you have any help you can give me?

Also, do you know where I can find a good diagram of where the springs attach to in case I get lost?

Thank you,
Rick

A. Usually when drum brakes grab backing up, is because the shoes are in the wrong position. It is easy to mix up the shoes and a lot of people don't even realize there is a difference. There is a simple rule to follow and it's easy to remember, "Long shoe in back."

And here's the diagram you wanted.
