Suzuki Samurai Fan Belts

Q. Hello: Suzuki Samurai, 1988, 4 cylinder, manual transmission, 1600 cc(?) Mileage 115,000. Very dependable until just recently. I've been breaking V Belts for no apparent reason. I've checked the tension, grooves, but no clear answer. Should I be suspecting a problem with my water pump? I hear a rattling noise, bearings? This is the only other answer I can think of.

And I probably just answered my question, but I'd like a second opinion before I tear it apart. Please advise.

Thanks!
Albert

A. I'm assume since you suspect the water pump as being the source of the problem you are only having a problem with the alternator belt. If that is the case then I agree, it is probably the water pump. Take the belt off and check for play in the water pump shaft. Replace it if there is.
