Jeep Wrangler: Get The ABS?

Q. Vince, I am looking to buy a 2003 Jeep Wrangler. I am looking at the options and I am sorry to say I am unsure about the importance of some features. How important are four wheel Antilock Brakes and rear wheel differential? I do not do any off-roading but I do live in a cold winter area and have to deal with snow and bad weather conditions in the winter.

 Jeep Wrangler: Get The ABS?

I want to be safe with my kids being in the car a lot. Are these options really worth the extra cost? Is it foolish or unsafe not to have them?

Thanks,
Steve

A. Four wheel ABS is a good idea, especially under the conditions you describe. The one thing to keep in mind that a lot of people don't realize, ABS brakes do not stop the car faster than conventional brakes. It takes them longer to come to a stop in snow and ice. Shortly after ABS brakes became available, the number of rear end accidents in the winter months went up dramatically because people believed the ABS will let them stop on a dime in snow and ice.

All ABS does is allow you to keep control of the vehicle by not allowing the wheels to lock up. If the front wheels lock up, you are riding in an uncontrolled missile and no telling where you'll end up.

Get the ABS, keep this in mind and you'll have a much safer car.

As for the differential, All jeeps come with a rear differential. If you mean a posi rear, I would recommend it if finances allow.
