Questions and Answers
My question is, at 30,000 miles on it the service manual says that I need to replace the trans fluid. Can I put in a synthetic ATF when I do the service or should I use regular fluid because it has 30,000 on it. Will the new synthetic be able to be with the old fluid that is still in the trans after the change. Also should I use a synthetic gear lube for my rear end. I replaced the fluid once at 15,000 and I want to do it at 30,000. Can I use the synthetic gear lube too?
Synthetic or Natural?
Q. I have a 1996 Chevy Silverado with 31,000 miles on it. It has a 5.7 V8 and 4 speed automatic trans with overdrive and air conditioning. I had the truck since new and at the first oil change I put in synthetic oil and at every oil change.
Thank for the help,
JohnA. Boy, talking synthetic or natural lubes is like talking politics or religion. It's sure to raise an argument. Just post this question on my Forum and you'll see what I mean.
There are pros and cons on both sides of the fence and since I have plans for the rest of the year, I won't go into them right now. What I can do is give you my personal preference based on my years of experience.
My preference is to use a natural lube for whatever application. If it's motor oil, I use a natural oil. Transmission, natural ATF and so forth. The thing is not so much as to whether you use natural or synthetic, it's the regular changing of the fluids that will really keep you going. Regular maintenance will do more to keep you going than anything else you can do.
