Ping, Ping, Ping

Q. I have a 1986 Buick Skyhawk, 2.0 liter, throttle body fuel injection, front wheel drive, automatic, 75,000 miles.I always use high octane gas and change the engine oil every 3 thousand miles. I also use GM engine oil supplement which is added after each oil change.

I am having problems with engine ping. The engine pings after the car is warmed up to operating temperature. The engine pings very loudly on light acceleration. When I accelerate to a higher speed the pinging seems to stop. I installed a new distributer cap and rotor, spark plugs and wires, pc valve and air filter, and a new EGR valve (all Delco parts) This engine calls for timing to be set at 6 degrees btdc. When the timing was checked, the reading was at 0 degrees. the timing was set to between 5 and 6 degrees btdc. After all this work was completed, I took the car for a test drive to fine that the engine was now pinging worse than before.It is now pinging on low acceleration and high acceleration after the engine is at operating temperature. Do you have any ideas that will correct this problem.

A. There was a TSB 86-6E-26 issued by GM about this in Mach of 1988. There is a revised PROM for 1985 and 1986 Buick Skyhawks to fix this problem.

If you have a California model the PROM part number is: 16123000
If you have a Federal model the PROM part number is: 16122999

These are GM part numbers. There is a special tool needed to replace the PROM's so you might want to have your mechanic do it.
