Chevy Camaro Shifter Problems

Q. Have a problem with 1999 Chevy Camaro 3.8 liter 5 speed with lightly driven 30,000 miles. Transmission shift lever will not move from neutral into reverse or fifth gear position. All other gears drive fine. Am I looking at a transmission overhaul or is there something I can do with just the shifter. Have changed a transmission before on a 3.8 liter Mustang 5 speed (T-50). Are these transmissions similar? Many thanks for this web site.

Chevy Camaro Shifter Problems

A. All transmissions are fairly similar. Sounds like a problem in the shifter or the shift rails inside the box. You can try messing with the shifter first but I have a feeling that the rail or syncro may be the problem. There is not a whole lot to the shifter, when you get it out you will see what I mean.
