Chevy Cavalier Stalls But It Stopped
Q. I have just recently purchased a used car for my girl friend. It is a 1992 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 liter four cylinder with an automatic transmission. It has about 186,000 kilometers, has ABS, P/S, A/C, rack and pinion steering, and has a carburetor. After driving for a period of time when I go to stop or slow down and it convulses and stalls.
I can start it up again but I have to wait a while before I can put it into gear. I try to figure things out myself and do what repairs I can so I consulted my Haynes manual and your web page.
According to my research I could possibly have a problem with my TCC solenoid. But! here is my problem. I fixed the brakes, added some transmission fluid because it was low, and put on a new drive belt because it was screeching.
It seems to run okay now and has not stalled since. Could the problem have been something else?

A. I doubt it. This sounds like the classic symptom of a TCC solenoid failing. Just wait it out, it'll come back. You could always pull the plug on the side of the transmission to disconnect it.
