Apprenticeship
Q. Dear Mr. Ciulla, My name is Elishia and I am a grade 12 student at Victoria High School. I have been investigating the opportunities for female mechanics in this day and age. I have been taking mechanics in school but wish to seek employment with a journeyman as an apprentice.
The apprenticeship lasts four years and is assisted by ITAC (Industry training and apprenticeship commission). They pay for my schooling once a year, and give me the certificate as a journeyman when I have completed my training.
What I am trying to say is that if you could help me in my search for a journeyman I would be very appreciative. Thank you for the time you have taken reading this and I hope we will speak again soon.
Sincerely,
ElishiaA. I know GM, Ford and Chrysler have apprentice programs for new technicians so contacting one of them should yield information on how to enter the program.
If you wish to enter the field as a general mechanic/technician, then it is a little more difficult. You would have to find a shop who is willing to take you on as an apprentice. This is not as difficult as it sounds since most shops are willing to take on an apprentice. This is a good time to enter the field since there is a big shortage of qualified technicians and mechanics.
