Vehicle Service While In Warranty

Q. Hello Vincent, I have a fairly new Honda Civic that just turned over to 8,000 miles. My maintenance light has gone on which means it's time for my first maintenance which consists of rotating tires, changing oil and filter, checking brakes, etc. My question is this: The Honda dealer charges $69.00 for this service.

Vehicle Service While In Warranty

A local repair shop is running a special of only $25.00 for the same service. Am I risking it by not using the Honda Dealership for maintenance or is it safe to have these minor things done by a regular mechanic?

Thanks in advance for your response.
Best Regards,
Charlene

A. You do not need to go to the Honda Dealership to get routine maintenance work done. They can not deny any warranty repair simply because you had maintenance work done somewhere else. That is federal law. The important thing is that whatever parts are used meet Honda specifications, brand name parts do, and to save the itemized invoices as documentation that the work was, indeed, done.

However, in many dealerships special consideration is given to regular customers who have all their work done at the dealership. This is also taken into consideration when an out of warranty repair is considered for a good will warranty.
