Buick Transmission Problems

Q. I have another question about my 1983 Buick. 5.0 motor. Lately the check engine light come on. I put on a sensor near the manifold on the right side but still come on. Can you help me on what to do to correct the problem?

My second question is the transmission that come with the 5.0 Buick motor in 1983 year is a 200-4R. I have had lot of problem with it. First gear will go out. Rebuilds don't hold up. Can I change it to 350 with out overdrive that I have now. What do you recommend? Continue rebuilding the 200-4R, since I plan to keep the car, or go to 350 transmission that I hear will hold up better because it is bigger and can handle the Buick size. I will lose the over drive if I go to it. Can you help me on this problem? I hear that this is a call back year for Buick during 1983.

A. As for your first question, there is too little information for me to go on. What sensor did you replace? What is it that you are trying to correct? If you pulled the codes from the computer, what are they?

As for your second question, I don't see why you can't put a TH-350 in it. The only thing that might be a problem is drive shaft length but that is easy enough to handle. Should you try it? I would say give it a shot. If it holds up better, then you're ahead of the game. If not you can always go back to the TH-200-4R.
