Volkswagen Fox Fuel Pumps
Q. Hi, Hope you can help me. I have replaced the "in tank" fuel pump, the inline fuel filter. No help! My 1989 Volkswagen Fox will still not start. It turns over really good, but no fire. I checked the fuel pump fuse in the fuse box, and it's good. Can you offer me any suggestions on where to look next? I read the article about the person who didn't know if they had a Fox or a Jetta.

A. Are you sure it's a fuel problem. Have you checked for spark? Take a vacuum line off the intake manifold and spray some carburetor cleaner into the intake while someone cranks the engine over. If it starts and runs, you do have a fuel problem. If not, it's an ignition problem.
Also, your car has two fuel pumps. The one inside the fuel tank is a transfer pump and the one next to the fuel tank is the main fuel pump. If it is a fuel problem, you need to be sure both are getting power. If they are and they are, indeed, running, you then need to check fuel pressure.
