Questions and Answers

High Fuel Consumption

Q. Dear Mr. Vincent Ciulla, Hello, How are you? Hope this mail of mine will find you in best of your health. Sir, I own a Korean KIA Spectra 1500cc, manual transmission, EFI. Sir, my problem is the sensitivity of the engine when I drive the car it gives me just 6-7KM/litre (15-17 mpg) but when my brother drives the same car it gives 8-10KM/litre (19-24 mpg).

I myself am an engineer and I do understand the impact of driving habits but the difference of 3-4 KMs is too much. This particular problem is with this car. We had a Corolla EFI this sort of problem was never felt. I hope you will reply to my mail, as I am very much interested to solve this mystery as an owner as well as an engineer. Waiting for your prompt reply. Please pay my best regards to your family.

Sincerely,
Agha

A. All things being equal, including driving habits, you both should get the same gas milage from this car. Since the car is the same and the only variable is the driver, then, reasonably, that is the only thing that can account for the discrepancy. It could very well be that this car being, presumably, newer that it is more sensitive to the driving habits of the driver. Also modern computers will "learn" the driving habits of a particular driver and adapt fuel management strategies for that driver.

So at this point all I can say that it is the difference in drivers is causing the discrepancy. There is no mechanical reason that I can think of that would cause it.
