Removing The Shaft And Housing Assembly - Continued

Figure 1

With the shaft and housing assembly removed, the dimmer switch actuator can now be removed. It simply lifts out. Attached to the back side is a long actuator rod that feeds down through a hole, through a guide in the steering column and to the dimmer switch assembly mounted on the top left hand side of the steering column just under the ignition switch assembly. Figure 1.

Here you can see the long actuator rod spoken of above. Figure 2.

NOTE: When re-assembling, be sure to replace this actuator before putting the shaft and housing assembly back on as it can not be done.

Figure 4. On the bottom right you can see the key lock retaining screw. To remove the Ignition switch lock assembly (where the key goes in), lift up the buzzer switch (5). Then unscrew the ignition lock switch screw (6). See below for more info. Then the key lock (7) can be removed. Rock back and forth and pull out.

NOTE: The key should be in the lock position, (This is where the key can be removed) and the gear shift in the park position. This holds the steering shaft lock (The lock prevents the steering wheel from being turned while in the key off position), in the locked position.

Here is a close up view of the Key Lock retaining screw.

NOTE: The screw is almost hidden normally when the buzzer is inserted completely. Simply pry up the buzzer with a thin blade to reveal screw.

NOTE: Just above the buzzer switch assembly is a knob. This is where the tilt spring bottom plastic piece seats when installing the spring.
