Changing Civic Spark Plugs

Q. Hi Mr. Ciulla, I just bought a set of new NGK spark plugs for my Civic. In the car's manual, it says the gap should be 1.1mm or .04". My question is, which number do I use. Those two numbers do not line up on the spark plug gapper, and therefore I have two choices?

Oh, and how do you install them if you do not have a torque wrench? Can I just turn them until I feel them catch, and then turn them 2/3 more?

1997 Honda Civic EX (VTEC)
4 cylinder
1.6 liter
Air Conditioning, Cruise Control
Power windows, sunroof, locks

Thanks!
Alysia

A. Either number is good. As you can see the actual spec is 0.043" which is right in the ballpark.

Engine Type Spark Plug
(NGK)
Gap
D16Y5 ZFR4F-11 1.1 MM / 0.043"
D16Y7
D16Y8
ZFR5F-11 1.1 MM / 0.043"
B16A2 PFR6L-13 1.3 MM / 0.051"

Apply a small quantity of anti-seize compound to the plug threads, and screw the plugs into the cylinder head finger-tight. Then torque them to 13 foot pounds which is about a ¼ to ½ turn.
