Idle Chatter From the Rear

Tuesday August 21, 2007
It's nice to have someone to talk to, but if your car has gotten so chatty you can't get a word in, it might be time to get it fixed. This letter came from Mary B. in Detroit:
I have a serious problem that I hope you can help with. Actually I don't know if it's a serious problem or not! I can tell you I'm tired of it! Any time I sit at a stop light, my car starts to rattle. It's not a huge rattle, but it's enough for me to hear from inside the car, and it's louder if I roll down the window. It sounds like it's coming from under my seat, it goes away as soon as I drive off. It's driving me batty.
I'd appreciate any help you can give, Mary.
Mary, we agree. You need some help. First you should be sure your mother-in-law isn't hiding behind the front seats. That's sure to create a large amount of unwanted chatter. If you've performed the mother-in-law check and came up empty, it's time to check your exhaust system.
There are a number of heat shields underneath your car to keep the hot exhaust pipes from heating up the passenger compartment. Sometimes these can start to come loose, and boy do they love to rattle. It's easy to fix a loose heat shield and only takes a few minutes. While you're under there, it would be a good time to check or replace your exhaust hangers.
In the unfortunate case your mother-in-law test came back positive for a mother-in-law in the back seat droning on and on, we can only suggest earplugs.
