Definition: A microprocessor based engine management systems that utilizes various sensor inputs to regulate spark timing, fuel mixture, emissions and other functions. Used on most vehicles since 1981 to comply with federal emission regulations. Diagnosis usually requires accessing trouble codes and/or putting the system into a special diagnostic mode.
