Cherokee Craps Out Hot
Q. Vincent, My 1987 Jeep Cherokee, 4.0 liter 6 cylinder, manual transmission, fuel injected, approximately 200,000 miles, always starts and seems to run fine but in warm weather, 75 and above, after the vehicle runs for about 30 to 45 minutes it will stall. After it cools down it starts and runs fine. In cold weather never a problem.
I've had it towed 3 times to 3 different repair facilities and by the time it gets there it starts and runs and no one can seem to find anything wrong. Temp gauge does not show overheating. No oil burn. Has not been tuned up in 6 years (30 to 40 thousand miles. I change fluids regularly (oil and filter every 3000, coolant every 2 years, differentials every 2 or 3 years).
Recent emissions test showed the engine to run very clean. It is so far within tolerances I don't know why the State wastes by time (I'd be happy just to send them the money - but that's another story) Any ideas?
Thank you in advance for your help.
JK (Connecticut)A. This is a classic symptom of a bad ignition module. When they start to go bad, they will run fine when they are cool but will crap out once they get hot. To confirm this, the next time it dies check to see if you have spark. No spark means bad module.
