1964 Mustang Blowing Coolant
Q. My husband and I picked up this 1964 Ford Mustang this weekend in Nebraska, drove her to South Dakota and then towed her home to Kansas. She ran great until we got her home.
She starts right up, sounds good, goes about three miles and then starts lunging and dies. She always starts right back up but will not stay started and as soon as you put her in gear she just lunges dangerously like a bucking bronco, the brakes don't want to hold her back. We cleaned out the carburetor, replaced the spark plugs, air and fuel filters and checked the thermostat. That all looks good.
Last night we noticed that when the car is running, the temperature gauge goes up, antifreeze spills out of the overflow hose, the temperature gauge goes back down to cold and the antifreeze quits spilling. Please advise, I haven't been in auto tech in 12 years and my husband is also a novice and we really want to get her back on the road but it's just not safe with the lunging and dying.

CarbThanks so much,
MichelleA. Well Michelle, it sounds like either the thermostat is stuck closed or you blew a head gasket.
I would throw in a new thermostat and try it. If it sill does it, the next thing to do would be take a compression test and that will confirm the head gasket.
