Taurus Remote Keyless Entry

Q. I have a few questions I hope you may be able to help me with. I have a 1997 Ford Taurus GL, V-6 3.0 liter, automatic transmission, 75,000 miles, fuel injection, A/C, and cruise control.

My keyless entry remote will no longer lock my doors but well still unlock my door (I've checked the remote batteries and they are still good). I notice that when I try to lock the doors, the locks stutter and a clicking noise is made and continues even after I've pushed the button (this also happens when I unlock my doors but they will eventually unlock).

The power locks in the car work fine. I'm unsure as to what could be causing this (possibly the modules going bad or something wrong with the locking mechanism in the door)?

Also, I discovered recently that I could only turn my rear defogger switch on when the car is in park. Even when the switch is on, the rear defogger won't work. Any idea as to what could be happening?

A. It is possible the remote(s) may need to be reprogrammed.

Cycle ignition from OFF to RUN or ACC eight (8) times within 10 seconds, ending in RUN or ACC. All doors will lock then unlock to confirm programming mode. Press any button on first remote transmitter. Door locks will cycle to confirm programming. Press any button on second transmitter (up to four transmitters total possible). Turn ignition to OFF. The door locks will lock then unlock to confirm programming.
