Dirty Carburetor

Q. Hi, I have a 1984 Toyota Corona EX engine no 3a. The engine dies at under 1,000 rpm, it will restart and run above that. We were told that there could be dirt in the idle assembly? Where do we find that?

Thanks,
Debbie

A. This is a common problem with that carburetor. Basically what you are told is correct, it is dirt in the carburetor that is the problem. What you need to do is get a carburetor "top kit". This is basically a gasket that goes between the top of the carburetor and the body. Take the top off and you will need to give the float bowl, accelerator pump and jets a good cleaning with carburetor cleaner.

You need to be very, very careful because there are a couple of ball type check valves that are easy to lose. If you do lose one the only way you're going to get replacements are with a new carburetor. I remove one jet at a time and shoot the cleaner through each passage, forward and backward. You can use some canned compressed air, like for cleaning computer parts, to blow them out when you are done.

When you're done cleaning, use the new gasket and put it back together and all you'll need to do is adjust the idle speed.

Since this involves disconnecting linkages and disassembly of the carburetor, I recommend this to a moderate to advanced DIY. If you have any doubts to your ability to do this job, take it to a professional.
