Explorer Power Steering Pump
Q. Hello, I have read through your writings and have come to the point where I need to ask for help. I need instructions on removing and replacing the power steering pump in my 1991 Ford Explorer. I then have to take the pump to the autoparts store so I can get the pully swapped. Can you e-mail me instructions or a diagram on how to do this, or do you have a link to a place with step by step instructions.
Thanks so much for your help.
ChrisA. That's a pretty straighforward job. Here's what you have to do.
- Drain power steering pump reservoir and disconnect return hose at reservoir. Drain it into suitable container.
- Remove drive belts.
- Remove oil dipstick tube, if needed.
- Remove power steering pump bracket support brace, if equipped.
- Remove pump to bracket attaching bolts, then remove pump.
- Reverse procedure to install.
It's about a two hour job.
