1986 Cressida V-6??
Q. Dear Vincent, I have an 1986 Toyota Cressida V-6 (some kind of high performance) which has developed a leak in the solid tube running from the back of the water pump around the back of the engine and on to the other side of the engine. We have been unsuccessful in determining exactly how this tube is hooked up or if it has any runs in the back that we can't see.
Could you explain how we may be able to repair this. We thought to cut on both sides, cut a couple of new pieces from the existing tube and try to hand press them into the orifice's. Then use high temp hose and clamps. Part of the issue is it looks like we may have to at least take off the exhaust on one side and the worse case scenario is to pull the engine. Since I must pay for this to be done it seems a costly solution.
This is really an irritant. We have nothing in the manual to show us how to extract this thing. If you could help us we would be very grateful.
Don
A. Don, you got me on this one. All my reference books, parts manuals and time guides don't even show a V-6 for that car. The first year I see a V-6 in any Toyota is 1988. That is a 2VZ-FE engine and hopefully that is what you have.
I do seem to remember the tube you're talking about, but since I never had one with a problem, I never got into them. If it is as I seem to remember, the tube enters the water pump and there is an O ring sealing it. If that is the case cutting and fitting hoses, which is not a bad idea, will not work because the tube has to be solidly bolted down to stay in the water pump.
I don't see the engine coming out to remove this tube. It will require some disassembly, but it will come out. Once you do get it out, I would replace the tube with a new one. You don't want to go through all this work and roll the dice in whether a repair is going to work.
