Corolla Fuel Gauge

Q. I have a 1986 Toyota Corolla and when I fill the tank the gauge reads full. After driving for the day I park it. The next day when I start up the gauge reads half full but I've only driven 40 miles (according to milage). Then it gets worse as I drive the gauge starts to drop until it is at "E" or below. I panic and stop for gas only to put in $2.71. How can I fix it, any ideas?

Thanks,
Chazz

A. The problem is very likely with the sending unit inside the gas tank. Unplug the connector at the fuel tank. The gauge should go to EMPTY. Then ground the Y/R wire and the gauge should go to FULL. If it does, replace the sending unit in the tank. If not, replace the fuel gauge.
