Accord Loses Two Gears

Q. I have a 1986 Honda Accord DX, automatic transmission with 131,000 miles. Think it's carburetted. I have a problem with the shifting, I start the car, and put it in reverse and pull out, when I put it in drive (D4) nothing happen. I put it in neutral then drive again nothing. So I put I it in (D3) and nothing happen again. I put it in (D2) and it select it, and was able to go forward.

This happen again two day later at a stop-light. I am short on money, and going to college. Is there anything you can recommend?

Thanks,
Raja

A. First thing I would recommend is to get a transmission fluid and filter change and make sure the throttle shift cable is adjusted properly and go from there. It may just be a partially clogged transmission filter causing the problem. If that does not resolve the issue, then what is left is not good news. The problem is inside the transmission.
