Questions and Answers
Mufflers Or Glass Packs?
Q. Hey, I just have a quick question about mufflers I'm looking for a nice loud, deep tone, and glass packs attracted my attention, but from what I have seen it seemed to be directed at ATV's more than cars. I was wondering if it would be practical to put one on a car, and would I need to repack it as some web sites suggest.
If you think it's not a good idea, do you have any recommendations for mufflers? Also, I see some mufflers that just have an empty hole in the center will I assume a damper around it, and others which are the more typical rectangle shape, are there any advantages to each, or is it the differing technology.
Would the straight through type offer better sound, and are there types without the fiberglass insulation so that you wouldn't need to replace anything.
Thanks for your time, hope to hear back soon.
PaulA. Back in the old days I had an old 1963 Ford Country Squire station wagon with a 351 and dual exhaust. One day one muffler fell off on the BQE in New York. So I got a couple of 24" glass packs from work and "modified" them as we did back then. I took a ½ quart of oil and a ½ quart of gasoline, mixed them together and poured the mixture inside the glass packs until the fiberglass was thoroughly soaked.
I laid them down on the floor and threw a match inside. After the fire went out I installed them on my car and made new tail pipes and welded the whole thing together.
Now I tell you, that was a very mellow sounding car. Just enough to let the engine wind up and quiet enough to keep the local law enforcement folks off me back. This was a very popular modification in the 60's and 70's. I must have installed hundreds of glass packs on just about any car you can think of. Even a 1948 Pontiac with a straight 8 cylinder engine.
Now this is something I can't really recommend you do today. You will have to check with your local Police Department and find out what the noise laws are in your area and State. But if it is leagl, glass packs can give you a nice, even, mellow sound that won't get people upset when you come down the street at 3 am.
