Jeep Wrangler Doesn't Get High

Q. Hi Vincent, I have an 1989 Jeep Wrangler that doesn't seem to go into 4X4 when the shift lever is pulled to 4 Hi. 1989 2.5 engine. I just pulled the transmission to replace the hydraulic throw out bearing and installed a new clutch plate for good measure. Not related to the current problem as far as I know.

After reassembly I checked the transfer case and found it dry. I had suspected it was leaking prior to all this because of some fluid around the rear bearing (splattered on the bottom of the Jeep).

Four Low seems okay but 4 Hi doesn't make the steering feel different as it used too and the dash indicator does not light to indicate 4X4. I checked the bulb and that is good. Again 4 low drags everything down and feels right but doesn't light the indicator either.

Any ideas? I have 72,xxx on it and no major mods other than offset rims and 235's instead of the 195's the manual indicates. HELP!!!! I needs my 4 wheel drive before the snow flies!

Thanks,
Orie

A. There is not too much externally that would keep it from going into 4 Hi. Externally it's just linkage. If the linkage is okay, then the problem is internal. If the transfer case was run for an extended period of time without fluid, then it's likely the internal parts were damaged. I suspect the mode shift synchronizer is gone.
