Couple Of Nissan Altima Questions
Q. Hi Vince! My question is two fold. Well, I guess I have 2 questions.
1. Recently, my it has become all too easy for the stick to pull out of first gear (and only first gear) while I'm stopped or almost stopped. The stick feels very loose and a friend of mine commented on its "looseness" just the other day. What might give?
2. Out of curiosity, does the Altima have a problem with hydroplaning? I have to put on very expensive tires just to feel safe over 35 mph in a rainstorm. A few years ago, I realized this when driving in heavy rain and my speedometer kept racing to 120 mph+ and I knew I had lost contact with the road. The problem was solved with new, deep-treaded tires. Is the Altima overly light?

DavidA. There is a bushing that is on the bottom of the shifter that wears out and will make the shifter feel loose. I would check that first. If that's okay follow the shift linkage forward and have someone move the shifter around while you watch the linkage. You will see what is loose pretty easily.
As for the hydroplaning, it has not been my experience that this car is any more or less susceptible to it. It is not an unduly light vehicle so I don't see where that might be a problem. Besides, the weight of the engine and transmission sit squarely on the drive wheels which would improve traction.
Any car would begin to hydroplane at speeds above 35 to 40 mph unless they have tires specifically designed to prevent it.
