Ford Escort Blower Motor

Q. Hi, I have scoured your site, wonderful by the way, for help and couldn't find it. I have a 1995, 1.9, automatic Ford Escort with two major problems and many minor that I won't bother you with right now.

#1 water dumps inside my car when the air conditioner runs, not a squirt, a pouring, and it dumps more when you turn a corner. But this only happens (happened) when the air conditioner was being ran for quite a while. How do I stop this from happening? But for right now...

#2 no more blower fan, so the above moot for now. any way I took the blower motor off and tested it and it works fine, I can't locate the relay, resistor or fuse that may have caused it to stop working. where is it located?

Thanks in advance,
Gail

A. You know Gail, I really like seeing a lady who is not afraid to get her hands dirty and take care of her own car. No one has yet been able to show me where it is written that if you have breasts you can't fix a car as well as anyone.

Anyway. This sounds like a couple of simple things to fix. First off the water coming in is from the A/C system. There is a drain hose sticking through the firewall that is clogged up. It is about 1½" wide and pointing down. You might have to get under the car to see it. Gently clean it out with a piece of coat hanger.

Okay, so we know the blower motor is good lets check some wiring. Check for power at the dark blue wire at the blower motor. If there is no power, then check fuse 11 in the fuse box. If it is good, then you have a wiring problem between the fuse box and blower motor.

If you have power, ground the dark blue/black wire at the blower motor resistor. The blower motor should run. If it does, the wiring between the blower motor and the resistor is good. Now ground the dark blue/white wire. The blower motor should run. If it does, the resistor high speed circuit is good.

Now ground the dark blue/red, dark blue and dark blue/yellow wires from the resistor. It should turn the blower motor on at three different speeds. If it does, the resistor is good.

If everything checks out up to there, then you most likely have a bad control assembly in the dash.
