Questions and Answers

Mitsubishi Montero Timing Belt

Q. I have three questions, first, is there any substitute for the special tools Mitsubishi says you need to replace the timing belt, MB 990767-01 and MB 998715?

Second, from what I read on the web the 3.0 liter SOHC engine has enough clearance between the valves and pistons that a broken belt will not damage the pistons or valves. Is this correct and if so is there any other damage a broken belt may cause?

Third, how do I align the camshaft and main crankshaft so the timing will be correct when assembling with no reference points from an intact belt?

  • 1992 Mitsubishi Montero
  • 3.0 liter SOHC
  • Automatic transmission
  • 220,000
  • Fuel Injection
  • ABS brakes
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise control

Thanks for your assistance,

A. 1. The two special tools, MB 990767-01 and MB 998715 are not required. MB 990767-01 just holds the engine from turning while removing the front crankshaft bolt. MB 998715 is merely a 1 1/16" (I think) socket.

2. This is a non-interference engine, so if the belt breaks there will be no engine, or any other, damage done.

3. Here's diagram of the timing alignment marks.
