Hornet Vinyl Roof

Q. I'm restoring a 1977 AMC Hornet, and keep it under canvas outdoor (Florida). The roof under the vinyl covering feels like it is rusting, but the car itself is in good condition. When I rub my hand along the top I feel bumps under the vinyl.

The vinyl is in good condition so could it be the glue they used? I know for a fact it's the second vinyl covering. Or could it be rust?

I know I should maybe peel and look, but the top wasn't planned in the restoration and was hopping to save it for last. What do you think?

Thanks,
Chazz

A. Well Chazz, it could be rust. Those old Hornets did have a tendency to have the roofs rust up pretty good. Unfortunately there is no way to tell for sure unless you peel back the vinyl roof and look at it. However, I would postpone doing that until you are ready to do the roof.
