Mercedes 300D Axles

Q. I enjoy the information you provide, now I have a problem. I recently bought a 1984 Mercedes Benz 300D turbo diesel. I'm very pleased with the car and it runs like a top, but there is a problem. The inner axle shaft boot is torn. A mechanic told me it would be advisable to replace the axle.

The prior owner had purchased all of the factory service manuals and included them in the sell. Is this a DIY project with some basic mechanical knowledge, or best left for the pro?

A. I don't see why a DIY with moderate skills couldn't do this job. The only problem I foresee is possibly the special tool needed to remove the axle flange bolts. I know Snap-On Tools carries it (that's where I got mine) but I'm not sure if you can get it at an Auto Parts store. Of course you can get one from a Mercedes Benz dealer.

By the way, I love my 1983 300D.
