Ford Bronco Shifting Problems

Q. I've searched through your site and I am not really sure what to look for. We bought a 1986 Ford Bronco II used and are starting to have a transmission problem (or it might be a 4WD problem as we were engaging the 4WD while driving). The transmission will now not shift from second to third and it feels as if it is slipping very quickly from first to second.

Ford Bronco Shifting Problems

Is this because of the 4WD or transmission? I'd hate to go to a shop and get charged for something I might have corrected. Incidentally, the 4WD button will no longer operate. That is one reason I'm not sure which problem to check first. For info, the vehicle is a 1986 Ford Bronco II, power steering, ABS, cruise control, VIN: 1FMCU14T7GUD22127, A/C, 4WD.

Thanks,
Travis

A. The a4LD transmission was a real problem child for Ford. Lot's of problems with them. Any one of which could be the cause of the problem you're having.

What I would do is check the transmission modulator. Pull the vacuum line off and if you see transmission fluid inside the line, replace the modulator.

The best way to check a Ford A4LD modulator is to remove it from the transmission. Connect a vacuum pump to the inlet on the modulator, install the pin, and pump vacuum to 17 inches. Be sure the pin drops. If the pin does not drop, check for a restricted orifice at the vacuum inlet tube.

I would also suggest a transmission fluid and filter change, not a flush, just a fluid and filter.

Another thing to do is check the fuses and make sure there is power to the 4WD Switch. You can also try removing and reinstalling the shift motor. Sometimes this helps a shifting problem.
