Q. I have a 1984 BMW 733i (E23) L6-3210cc 3.2L SOHC (M30). It has about 219,000 miles on it and still runs like a top. I have several problems I have to attend to. I can't find a repair manual for it. Where should I look?
1) Idle is high, 1,500 rpm. How do I adjust it?
2) I think I have a heater core leak. Antifreeze leaking into the passenger compartment on the passenger side. Would Bars Leak fix it?
3) Brakes need to be done, pads, rotors. How much like a GM vehicle are the brakes? I have done my own GM vehicles but don't know anything about BMW's.
4) Fuel hose hardening under the intake manifold. Where can I find info to make repair?
5) Cruse control does not work. Don't know anything about it. What should I look for?
6) Drivers door lock not working. Key won't go all the way into the lock. Any ideas?
That is all I can think of at this moment. Can you help me with any of the problems I have? The biggest thing is finding a repair manual so I can restore this fine vehicle.
Thank You for your help.
RobertA. Finding Service and Repair manuals for BMW is rather difficult for some reason. I think it's because BMW is really secretive about the engineering of their cars.
There is an online service manual you can subscribe to through Alldata. The cost is about $20.00 a year and it, I believe, is well worth it. But maybe I shouldn't tell you about it. Then you won't need me any more. Well, let me get these questions for you.
1) Idle speed is adjustable, but the BMW service test unit must be connected to adjust it. There was a recall on the Idle Control System. You might want to check to see if the recall was done.
2) I would not recommend using Bars Leak under any circumstances.
3) If you can do GM brakes, you can do BMW brakes. They are four wheel disc and the attachments are somewhat different, but easily figured out. The rotors are basically use once and throw away. Rarely have I done BMW brakes that didn't need new rotors.
4) At this point I think Alldata is your best shot.
5) Probably a blown fuse. Check them all with a test light and replace the bad ones. Also, the actuator may be bad and needs replacement.
6) The lock cylinder is probably no good. It must be replaced.
