Have A Belt
Q. RE: 1976 Chevy Truck, 1 ton, Van Front, (G3 or G30 ?), V8 350
Looking for a drive belt routing guide (fan, alternator, power steering, etc). I had two belts break off at the same time and there are more pulleys and paths than belts. The Chilton's I have for this model neglects to show this tidbit of trivia. While I can trial-and-error, I'm concerned about oops-ing and getting something running in an incorrect direction.
Would greatly appreciate any pointers
Thanks in advance for your assistance,
JeffA. The one problem I have with a lot of these DIY service manuals is that they work on the assumption that the person using it has some basic knowledge of mechanics. This is, quite often, not the case. I think it's a mistake not including such basic information in a manual designed for the DIY.
I do not have a diagram for that engine, but I can tell you how the belts go. The first belt (closest to the engine) is the power steering belt. That goes from the crankshaft pulley to the power steering pump. The next belt is the air conditioning belt. That goes from the crankshaft pulley to the A/C compressor. (If equipped.) The last one is the alternator and water pump belt. That goes from the crankshaft to the water pump and the alternator. When you tighten this last belt, don't over tighten it as that will put undue pressure on the water pump shaft and cause premature wear.
