Chevy Camaro "Service Engine Soon"
Q. I own a 1997 Chevy Camaro V-6, 52,000 miles with P/S, cruise control and A/C. My "Service Engine Soon" light went on and off for a month as I followed the manual's suggestions to tighten fuel cap and change gas. When I finally took it into the dealer, I was told that my water pump had malfunctioned and the temperature sensor was the reason the light came on.
I was also told that the gasket needed to be replaced; however, it wasn't something that needed to be done immediately; in fact, it would probably hold up for a year. For the past six weeks, I've monitored my oil and checked my coolant weekly and have had no problem with either as I drive short distances.
No problem lights have come on and there has been no smoke. My questions: Can I drive the car on a 500 mile round trip this summer without worrying about the gasket? Is the dealer exaggerating the problem?
A. You failed to mention which gasket needs to be replaced. I'm guessing the intake manifold gasket. If that's the case it would probably. make it, but you will always be thinking about it through the whole trip.
This could be a good thing as you will be listening to any noises and watching for lights. Just be prepared for a breakdown. Take a long some coolant and water mixed as well as a quart or two of oil. A phone would be a good idea as well.
