Mercury Cougar Fuel Pumps

Q. Dear Sir: I have a 1988 Mercury Cougar Six Cylinder 3.8 liter engine, fuel Injected with air conditioning and automatic transmission. I need a fuel filter for this car and wanted to know if it is possible to get access through the trunk compartment?

Under the carpet in the trunk there is an opening that looks like it is filled in with some kind of putty or filler. Do you know if this could possibly be above the fuel pump? It is positioned in the back of the trunk in the middle of the car. Any help you can give would be greatly appreciated.

Thank You,
Mike

A. In your car you have two fuel pumps. A high pressure fuel pump near the fuel pump and a low pressure fuel pump inside the fuel tank.

To replace the high pressure fuel pump you do not need to remove the fuel tank. But to replace the low pressure fuel pump you do need to drop the fuel tank.
