Astro Van Shifting
Q. I've seen various postings about known Chevy Astro Van transmission problems, but I've also seen conflicting info on the exact cause and success rate in fixing.
Can you give me your take on this:
97 Astro Van, about 47,000 miles, 6 cylinder 4.3 Vortex engine, 2 wheel drive. When vehicle has been driven and is hot (30+ minutes in our Texas heat), the 1-2 shifts will be very rough. Described by some as 'slamming in' or feeling like someone has bumped into you from behind.
I've heard/read about problems with the valve (throttle???) body in the transmission which some have replaced. Others say they get the electronic reprogramming (kit) which fixes the problem. Either way, I've heard Chevy pleads ignorance of any known problem with their modified transmissions.
Thanks.
A. In my life time I have owned Fords, Dodges, Plymouths, Nissans, Lincolns, Toyotas, BMWs and Mercedes, but I have never ever, or will ever, buy a GM product. In my opinion they are the most poorly designed, poorly manufactured car in the would. I have said it many times, GM cars are the only cars in the world built broken. But that is only this mechanics humble opinion.
I have heard of this problem with the Astro Vans and when I have one come into the shop with it, I send them right to a transmission shop. There is a modified valve body that will supposedly correct this problem. While I know my way around a transmission and can rebuild them, I am not an expert in them. When I have one that has a history of problems like this one, I send them to someone I know has dealt with them and can successfully repair them.
