Volkswagen Jetta Transmission Noise

Q. Hi there, I have a question about transmission of my car.

  • 1996 Volkswagen Jetta GLX VR6
  • 6 cylinder
  • Automatic transmission
  • 94,000 miles
  • Fuel
  • ABS
  • P/S, A/C, Cruise
Volkswagen Jetta Transmission Noise

I hear noise in the transmission and it sounds like differential area. Does it sound right? Do I have to replace the whole transmission? Or, can I just repair the specific part inside transmission? If I need to replace the transmission, which way I can pay less? Please advise me for anything.

Thank you,
Hyun

A. The VR6 develops a significant amount of torque and horsepower and therefore if you're hearing a clunk I would suspect that you have a broken or worn engine or transaxle mount.

Incidentally, the car doesn't have a differential which on a rear wheel drive vehicle is where the rotation of the drive shaft is changed in a perpendicular direction to the axles. Your vehicle has a final drive built into the transaxle which rotates in the same plane as the engine.
