Nissan Speedometer

Q. I have a 1991 Nissan P/U manual 4 cylinder. The speedometer and the odometer both went out and from the research I have done I don't know how to tell if it's the cluster or the cable that I need to replace. Could you please tell me how to do that?

Thank You,
Jordan

A. To tell for sure, you have to take out the instrument cluster. Not very difficult in that truck. Once it's out, disconnect the speedometer cable from the transmission and spin the cable by hand or chuck the end in a drill and spin it. If the end in the dash doesn't spin, then it's a broken cable. If it does, then it's the speedometer itself.

It has been my experience that when the speedometer and odometer stop working, it's the cable. If the speedometer stops working and the odometer keeps going, it's the speedometer.
